Jackman Humanities Institute Working Groups
The Jackman Humanities Institute sponsors up to 12 (twelve) working groups during each academic year. Each working group consists of graduate students and faculty who conduct research or engage in other scholarly exchange. A working group can be funded for one year, but may apply for renewal in future years (with a limit of five years running).
All working groups will be expected to provide progress reports on the activities of the group and a final accounting. The funds can support visitors, refreshments, materials, or other related costs. Each group is expected to meet at least four times a term, or a minimum of eight meetings a year.
Groups must be interdisciplinary, and each group must have participation from at least three different units (departments, centres, institutes or programs). Each group should have a minimum of six University of Toronto members and include balanced numbers of graduate students and faculty. All members of the group are expected to participate fully in the group’s activities. Previously funded working groups are eligible to re-apply. Participants may work with no more than two groups per year. Working Groups may be proposed by doctoral students, on the understanding that a faculty member named in the application will be responsible for the management of the funds awarded to the group.
The JHI provides space for meetings and small conferences on the first floor of the JHB (seating 100), and on the 10th floor (seating up to 25) in the JHI seminar room. We also offer a private virtual space through our website restricted to each group for conversation, postings, blogging, and shared research.
The topics for the working groups are NOT limited to the JHI annual theme.
Some possible activities for working groups include:
- a local area working group drawing from other universities in the GTA
- a group exploring new collaborative links
- a group producing a joint publication
- a group linked to a larger conference or seminar
The JHI does NOT support groups
- that properly should be supported by other programs or units
- that support the research program of a single or a pair of faculty member(s)
- that host a lecture series.
Applications for new working groups or renewals are solicited in the late spring. Click on Fellowships & Calls for Funding to apply.
Membership in Working Groups is normally open to the University of Toronto community, and may also be open to qualified individuals outside the University of Toronto. Membership is granted at the discretion of the group leader(s), upon request. If you are interested in joining a Working Group, please contact the leader(s) of this group to request membership.
