Hidden Stories of Gendered Violence in the Salvadoran Civil War

This film screening and talk delves into the untold experiences of women who suffered sexual violence during the Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992). The event will showcase “Añil” (Indigo), an award-winning 2023 documentary by Julio López that powerfully amplifies the voices of two survivors and their resilience in challenging the silence surrounding these atrocities. Dr. Paula Cuellar Cuellar, whose doctoral research informs the film, will be present to introduce this poetic and evocative documentary, highlighting the state's ongoing failure to address these crimes.

Bio: Paula Cuellar Cuellar is an Assistant Professor of History and the Jacqueline and Michael Wald Fellow in Human Rights, Genocide, and Holocaust Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota. Her research centers on mass violence in Latin America during the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on sexual violence during the Salvadoran Civil War, disappearances in Mexico, and genocide in Central America.
