Description

The Hong Kong-Canada Connections Working Group will be hosting a panel, Encountering Paradoxes: Problematizing Hong Kong Diasporas as a Global Imagined Community, at the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library on the 8th floor, on November 15, 2024, from 6–8 PM.

Studying overseas Hong Kongers reveals a series of paradoxes:

  • Belonging to a place yet dispersed to others
  • Seeking freedom in new lands while struggling to survive
  • Moving forward from trauma as emotions remain anchored
  • Being severed from the soil yet nurturing the roots of identity

This panel brings together scholars from various disciplines to discuss Hong Kong diasporas as a subject of paradox, embodying the struggles of navigating identity and life across multiple locations.

The Hong Kong-Canada Connections Working Group is a Jackman Humanities Institute Working Group.
