Dr. Amy Ratelle joined the Jackman Humanities Institute as a Strategic Research Development Officer in August 2021 to support researchers in the Humanities and qualitative Social Sciences across the tri-campus. She develops dedicated experiential workshops and programming support organized around five key areas:
- External funding applications
- Early career support
- Publication support
- Fostering research collaborations across disciplines and other models of community engagement
- Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
Research support as broadly construed in the above categories constitutes approximately 40% of our annual programming. The remaining 20% focuses on fostering productive connections between researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Two of our flagship programs cross between these two categories, built on interdisciplinary “cohorts” that meet across multiple weeks, such as the JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp (now in its fourth year), and the JHI Writing Retreat.
Dr. Ratelle also participates in and provides dedicated support to the annual JHI Circle of Fellows and provides Funded Research Officer services to select Faculty of Arts & Science humanities units.
2024-25 Research Programming
The upcoming academic year promises to deliver additional quality programming of value to the U of T Humanities and Social Sciences community. Priority areas continue to be generating meaningful support for both early and mid-career scholars, and higher-level programming around equity, diversity and inclusion. The “JHI How-to" series will continue to balance instructional content with practical components.
Upcoming programming includes:
- A Book Publishing Series event in collaboration with the Centre for Research & Innovation Support (February 4)
- Creating Your Research Narrative for awards & honours materials, tenure dossiers and progress-through-the-ranks annual documentation (February)
- Developing partnered research governance structures and related documentation (March)
- Leveraging Mitacs Globalink funding to assist in bringing international research assistants to work on your project for the summer term (April)
- A how-to workshop for graduate students on building a CV that demonstrates research excellence (June)
Our annual flagship programs, the JHI Writing Retreat (May 2025) and the JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp (June-July 2025) will continue to be offered.
Our calendar of events is being finalized so check back soon or check our Events page, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or Bluesky, or subscribe to our newsletter to learn more.
